The 11 Tapas Bars in Seville Where Locals Actually Go
Not a single one is on the tourist trail. I've been eating at these places my whole life — and I'm not sharing them lightly.
I need to say this clearly: the bars on Calle Mateos Gago — that picturesque street right next to the Cathedral — are not where sevillanos eat. They're not terrible. They're just priced for someone who'll never come back.
These are the places I've been eating at since I was a kid. They don't have English menus. Some don't have menus at all.
El Rinconcillo (Calle Gerona, 40)
Established 1670. The oldest bar in Seville. The staff write your tab in chalk on the wooden bar. Order the spinach with chickpeas (espinacas con garbanzos) and the cured ham croquettes. Sit at the bar, not the tables.
Bodeguita Romero (Calle Harinas, 10)
A few streets back from the Cathedral quarter, close enough to the river that you can smell it when the wind picks up. This is not a heritage-atmosphere bar. It is a kitchen that happens to have a bar. Small room, counter stools, a handful of tables. The kitchen is why people come back.
In 2023 it landed at number 47 on the Opinionated About Dining Casual Europe list. That sounds like a recommendation from a website. It is also, in practice, correct. Order the chipirones rellenos (stuffed squid), the pringá muffin — which sounds bizarre and is excellent — and the prawn potato salad. Tues–Sun, lunch is the main event. Come early or wait.
Mariscos Emilio (Calle Génova, 1)
Right on the boundary between Triana and Los Remedios, which means most tourists never find it. The business started in 1970 with a man named Emilio Guerrero selling seafood from a basket. That image is still the logo. There's a tank of live lobsters by the window, a long bar, and no pretence whatsoever.
The thing to order is the mojama aliña — their version of air-cured tuna, diced and dressed with extra virgin olive oil, spring onion, and fresh coriander. Forget the thin-sliced stuff you've had before. Also get the salpicón de mariscos and the gambas al ajillo. One note: some seafood is priced by weight. Ask before you commit. Open 13:00–16:30 and 20:00–midnight.
Becerrita (Calle Recaredo, 9)
Near the Puerta de Carmona, on the eastern edge of the Casco Antiguo. Five generations of the same family. This one is more restaurant than bar — you sit down, they take your order, the whole thing. Prices reflect that. What you get in return is serious Andalusian cooking with actual technique behind it.
Go in almadraba season (April–June) and order whatever tuna they're featuring. The atún rojo from the Atlantic trap fishery is not a marketing gimmick here — they run proper almadraba tasting experiences and the product shows up on the menu with that level of care. Reservations are sensible. Open daily 13:00–16:30 and 20:00–midnight.
Bocachica (Cardenal Bueno Monreal, 30)
Porvenir. South of the center, south of the river, in a residential neighborhood where the only reason you're there is because you live nearby or someone told you. No cathedral views. No tour groups. 4.6 on Google, which for a bar this size in this city is quietly remarkable.
The food is market-driven and precise. Order the tartar — whichever version is on — and something from whatever they've got fresh. The cheesecake is worth staying for. Cold beer, good atmosphere, no fuss. Weekdays it opens at 18:30; Thursday through Saturday it runs until 2 AM, which tells you the kind of place it is.
Cervecería Salmedina (Calle Guardamino, 1)
Just off Plaza Alfalfa, which means you can walk here from most of the Casco Antiguo in under ten minutes. Opened in 2021 by a team that includes a partner from Cañabota — one of Seville's best seafood restaurants. They also own a fish market in Rota, on the Cádiz coast. The supply chain matters here.
White tiles, tall bar tables, a proper terraza. Short menu that changes with the market. Order the ensaladilla de gambas — it's the best argument against dismissing potato salad — the brandada de bacalao on toasted bread, and the coquinas in manzanilla sauce. Save room for the individual cheesecake with a touch of cabrales blue. Pair it with a glass of cream sherry on ice with orange. Sounds wrong. Is right. Open 12:00–16:30 and 20:00–23:30.
